What Should You Do If You Have Flood Damage?
If you have flood damage, the most important thing is to get as much water removed as possible. The longer the area has standing water in it, the more damage you’ll have to deal with. Here are some other things you should do:
- Turn off the source of the water, if possible (in the case of a burst pipe or leaking appliance).
- Mop up the water, if possible.
- Put aluminum foil around the legs of furniture that cannot be removed from wet carpet. You can also raise the furniture off the wet floor with blocks.
- To let air circulate, open all doors and drawers.
- Take anything electrical away from the wet area.
- Remove cushions and other items from the area to dry elsewhere.
- Take anything that could be damaged to another area (paintings, books, etc.)
- Use fans or turn on the air conditioning to assist in drying out the area.
- Stay out of the damp areas as much as you can, and keep your children out of the area, too. This will limit your direct exposure to mold and other air-borne dangers.
If you’re dealing with standing water, remember following:
- NEVER try to remove water with a household vacuum cleaner.
- NEVER plug in anything while standing on a wet floor or use electrical outlets near standing water
- NEVER leave items made of paper on wet carpet.
